Live APRS Feed of Luxembourg

(from aprs.fi)

What is APRS?

APRS is the abbreviation for Automatic Position Reporting System. While you can only see your position with GPS you can communicate your position with APRS. The radio amateurs worldwide have set up a network with digipeaters forwarding any APRS signal to other stations or digipeaters.

When you are using your car for example your speed, heading, altitude etc... will be transmitted. Even the ISS (International Space Station) has APRS on board. Another nice example is the diving expedition to Antartica by LX2JK where he used APRS to communicate his current location. So even at home you could see realtime what's going on.

Some amateur stations also have a weather station connected to their transmitter and can send the WX data via the APRS Network.

You can even send SMS messages to another station.

APRS is easy to install as it runs with many Packet Radio Modems.

JOTA SETUP

JOTA Stations should use

  • JOTA,LUX3-3 or JOTA,WIDE3-3 on 144.800 MHz
  • JOTA,WIDE1-1,LUX2-2 or JOTA,WIDE1-1,WIDE2-2 on 432.500 MHz.

LUXn-n is preferred as traffic remains local and will nevertheless be routed through the internet.

Recommended APRS Parameters for Luxembourg (since August 2008)

  • Unproto address for fix stations (for example at home or using UI-View):
For 1 Hop use: APRLX, WIDE2-1 (please don't use WIDE1-1 which is for Mobile stations only)
for 2 Hops use: APRLX, WIDE2-2
for 3 Hops use: APRLX, WIDE3-3
In total not more than 3 hops! (Instead of or APRLX you can also use APRS)

  • Unproto address for Mobile stations:
For 1 Hop use: WIDE1-1 (the RELAY parameter has been changed to WIDE1-1)
    for 2 Hops use: WIDE1-1, WIDE2-1
    for 3 Hops use: WIDE1-1, WIDE2-2
In total not more than 3 hops!

  • Unproto address for setting objects (for example repeaters or shack):
Objects should be kept local. So use no hops if you are in reach of a gateway. This decision has also been made because of the new QSY Function of the TM-D710 and other rigs.
    Local info only, NO Hops!
Use of "Null" in2 examples of a Frame:
    LX0APN-2>APRLX,NULL <UI R Len=68>:
    ;LX0HI *010000z4954.68N/00603.49EmFM-repeater * R5 * 145.725 MHz

or (optimal for the QSY function of the TM-D710)
    LX0APR-2>APRLX,NULL <UI R Len=68>:
    ;145.700*010000z4942.66N/00609.93EmFM-repeater * LX0LU *

  • Unproto address with LUX parameters (beacons will only be repeated in Luxembourg):
For 1 Hop use: APRLX, LUX1-1
for 2 Hops use: APRLX, LUX2-2
for 3 Hops use: APRLX, LUX3-3
In total not more than 3 hops! (Instead of or APRLX you can also use APRS)

  • SSID's: No SSID is needed for fixed stations (home). Use SSID -9 for mobile stations ( Car )

Software

UI-View32

  • A nice software to run APRS at Home is UI-View by Roger Barker (ex. G4IDE).
Unfortunately Roger became a silent key on September 8 2004.
You can download and register UI-View for free. Please follow the following steps:
At the web page <http://www.apritch.myby.co.uk/uiv32.htm> enter your :
    1. Callsign and your name in the fields for UI-View;
    2. then select your country in the drop-down list. (*)
    3. If you use a web-based email solution, mark "Hotmail" (if you have a regular POP mail account don't tick this box)
    4. Then click "Register UI-View".
    5. Your e-mail application will open a new message with
Call and Name in like this:
    [[ (Callsign) XY1ZAB (Name) John Smith ]]
Don't enter anything more in this message, just send it.
    6. After a short while you will receive a notification with the code that can easily be imported into and processed by the
    registration system.
