Special Activity Callsign LX750D
750e Anniversaire de l'Affranchissement de la Ville de Diekirch
General Information
The region of Diekirch had been populated ever since. Prehistoric traces were found, the floor mosaics of some roman villas may be seen in the historical museum. In the Christianization era under the Merovingian emperors, a church was built; hence the name DIET KIRCH in medieval German, meaning "church of the people". Later, Diekirch had been made into a fortress with walls, towers and four town gates. The letters of freedom, dated between 1252 and 1266, led to a steady growth from the medieval marketplace and craftsmen's corporations to the advent of the railway and industry somewhat more than a hundred years ago. With a population of some 6000 today, Diekirch gathers regional administrations, a law-court as well as schools and tourist infrastructures.
